Was Adam Genderless Before Eve?
Some, like Dr. Phyllis Trible[1], suggest that Adam existed "without gender specification" prior to Genesis 2:22. However, if this were true, then Paul's argument in 1 Timothy 2 would collapse:
“And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.”
—1 Timothy 2:12–13 (NKJV)
Paul’s argument in 1 Timothy 2:12–13 depends on the order in which Adam and Eve were created: Adam was formed first, then Eve. This order is the basis for his statement that he does “not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man.” For that argument to work, Adam had to be male from the moment God created him, as shown in Genesis 2:7–8 (NKJV). If Adam had been genderless until Eve was made, then male and female would have appeared at the same time—undermining the idea that Adam’s creation came first and weakening Paul’s point about gender roles.
